Al-Amal HaTikva Organizes Study Day in Nazareth on Environmental Issues
From Panet's Website:
The organization, Al-Amal HaTikiva, organized and implemented a study day at the St. Gabriel Hotel in Nazareth for Arab and Jewish environmental and community activists to discuss predominant environmental problems that affect their townships and communities and find practical solutions to alleviate these problems.
The purpose of the study day was to initiate discussion between participants and develop a work plan for the future that solves environmental problems in the Galilee. These environmental problems, including sewage, air pollution, and trash, create serious hazards to the health and well being of all the citizens.
In an interview held by Panorama newspaper correspondent and Mr. Abed Namarne, Al-Amal's project coordinator, environmental activist, and coordinator of the Jewish-Arab Environmental Forum, Mr. Namarne stated: "The Environment is a joint issue, shared by Arabs and Jews alike. Both communities suffer from these environmental nuisances and we are aware that we must now work together to solve these problems, regardless of who is to blame in the past.
In the forum, we work together to raise environmental awareness among the community and to advocate local authorities and institutions for policy changes that would improve the environmental situation. We have held numerous meetings with mayors of local townships, community leaders, and religious leaders regarding these environmental dangers, and have received positive responses from these leaders.
"We in the Forum are not looking for those responsible for increasing environmental problems."
During a discussion between Panorama's reporter and a member of Al-Amal, Mazeen Horani, it was stated that "We are suffering in our communities from harsh environmental problems that are severely affecting our health. Through polluted water and air, open leaking sewage, and piles of garbage and trash, insects are spreading various diseases. I have joined this forum to fight to remove the asbestos sheets in our local school, School for Peace, because it can cause great health consequences. We in the forum are not looking for those who are responsible for the environmental problems present; rather, we are working to raise public awareness regarding these environmental issues among the community and local authorities."
